DEVELOPING GAMECHANGING SOLUTIONS IN THE CONTEXT OF MASS MIGRATION
The RIC was created to apply state of the art Methodologies from the Start Up world to the challenges that emerged in the context of mass migration. It is our expressed goal to find nationally and historically significant solutions. Additionally we are experimenting with new forms of idea generation and incubation for social entrepreneurs.
The process is designed to accelerate learning by keeping focused on the essentials so that the teams have a steep learning curve and build something that truly makes a difference. It is based on state-of-the-art methods such as Design Thinking, The Lean Start Up and the Business Model Canvas.
The participants are a highly diverse crowd from different countries…
The particpants formed teams focusing on housing and integration, levraging the potential of refugees even before they are allowed to work, improving language learning oportunities for high potentials, making information on higher education more accesible for refugees and creating opportuniteis for higher education.
REFUGEE INNOVATION CHALLENGE
Looking within We started with a few days in nature. Taking time to get to know one another and build a common vision and culture. We took time for introspection and to work on personal mission statements to make sure that emerging projects would be rooted in the fellows’ personal life mission.
Problems/ Outside experts We collected a variety of problems in the sector and invited outside experts and key stakeholders from the municipality, social workers and civil society to share about the key problems that they see.
Forming teams Based on an initial understanding of the problems at hand, one’s own priorities and each other’s personalities the Fellows formed initial teams.
Developing solutions The newly formed teams try to understand the reality of their target group as closely as possible. This is done mainly through observation and interviews. Hundreds of interviews were held and even a sleepover in a camp was made possible. Once the teams understand the needs, desired gains, tasks and perceptions of their target group they look for innovative solutions and test them.
Once the most fundamental assumptions of the idea are successfully tested, a business model is developed and followed by the implementation of a Minimum Viable Product. The tools that inspire our process are: Design Thinking, the Lean Start Up and the Business Model Generation.
Pitch On the 6th of October 2016, the teams will present their tested solutions to a selected audience to find support.
Outlook We are taking time to see in which ways we can point successful teams to receive the adequate support to build game changing social enterprises.

The housing and integration team focusses on finding solutions to the housing issue and the lack of integration within the refugee crisis. Refugees have to overcome many barriers in finding accommodation. Lacking trust of potential landlords, language and cultural barriers, legal uncertainties, as well as lacking knowledge on how to search for an accommodation, are[…]
“We don’t lack motivation, we lack opportunities.” (Mohammed, 25) Imagine you have nothing to do but sitting around and waiting. Every single day. For six months. Nine months. Or more. Would that bore you? Make you feel useless? Discourage you? This is why we are working on creating opportunities. To find motivation and self-determination, many[…]
